What to Expect
This May walk explores some of the finest limestone scenery of the White Peak, taking in High Wheeldon, Pilsbury Hill, and Carder Low. Starting from Earl Sterndale, the route follows a network of field paths and limestone hills, offering expansive views across the surrounding countryside. A key highlight is a visit to Pilsbury Castle, an Iron Age and Norman hillfort overlooking the River Dove, before the walk returns through peaceful farmland.
High Wheeldon is a steep start to the day, both up and down, poles recommended. The other hills are more gradual and easier to manage. We are mostly walking on grassy footpaths. There is some limestone nearer the tops which can get slippery when wet. The way back uses a bridletrack and quiet lanes. There is livestock throughout and it is lambing season.
