What to Expect
This rewarding walk begins in the historic town of Wirksworth and climbs steadily to “bag” the Ethel at Bole Hill. From there, it continues to the dramatic outcrops of Black Rocks and the high viewpoint at Middleton Top, offering wide-reaching views across the Derbyshire Dales. The route then returns to Wirksworth, where you can round off your adventure with a relaxing lunch in one of the town’s welcoming pubs or cafés.
We have some very steep climbs in this walk so be ready! Half of the walk is through fields and woods which have livestock. Watch out for cyclist as the rest of the walk is on a cycleway. The fields can get muddy and slippery. We're never too far from a road or Wirksworth itself. Coming down from Black Rocks is of course rocky. There is a short amount of road walking in the town.
