What to Expect
This enjoyable walk sets out from the charming village of Ashford-in-the-Water and follows quiet paths and tracks through classic Peak District countryside to the stunning viewpoint at Monsal Head, with a chance to admire the weir in Monsal Dale below. The route then loops back to Ashford, where you can finish with a well-deserved treat in one of the village cafés.
Some initial easy field walking and along the Monsal Trail. We will be walking through a tunnel for half a kilometre. The ground will be muddy in the Dale so take care as it will be slippery. There are sometimes livestock roaming the dale. The way up is steep and through woods with exposed roots underfoot. We followed a disused lane back to the village that will have loose rock. There will be a lot of ducks in the village by the river.
