What to Expect
This gentle walk through the Derwent Valley invites you to slow down and step into history. Following paths once familiar to Florence Nightingale, Anthony Babington, and John Smedley, the route weaves together landscape, industry, and remarkable lives. From the historic Smedley Mill through the villages of Lea, Dethick, and Holloway, the walk offers sweeping valley views, quiet lanes, and a strong sense of place. With a couple of relaxed café stops along the way, there’s time not only to walk, but to pause, reflect, and enjoy the rich character of this unique corner of Derbyshire.
We are in the Derwent Valley so there is some hill walking. The paths and lanes are well walked through farmed fields. There is a little road walking along a quiet road. There is livestock throughout including horses. We're taking this one slow and steady with lots of breaks as we are walking between quiet villages and hamlets.
