What to Expect
This walk begins in Matlock Bath and quickly climbs onto the steep hills above the town. The ascent is demanding in places, but the effort is well rewarded with sweeping views across the Derwent Valley and the surrounding limestone hills. From high paths and rocky viewpoints, the route offers a striking contrast between the busy valley below and the open, airy landscape above.
We start in busy, bustling Matlock Bath and have a short walk through a park until we cross the busy A6. There is a few metres of pavement walking before we start the steep ascent on the hills. There is a mixture of quiet road walking and footpaths until we reach woodland and open farmland. Up here there are disued mines though they should be well covered or gated off. We have more town walking through Matlock Town but we are mostly by the river. Its another steep ascent onto High Tor, and a steep descent to Matlock Bath. The walk is short but it will take us longer with the total ascent.
