What to Expect
This lovely walk from the village of Alstonefield explores the tranquil beauty of Dovedale, Milldale, and Wolfscote Dale. Follow peaceful riverside paths and enjoy the limestone scenery and gentle hills that make this part of the Peak District so special. If you’re lucky, you might be able to stop in Milldale for a warm sausage roll and a hot chocolate before continuing through the quiet valleys back to Alstonefield.
There is plenty of open path walking which is well walked and gravelled though it can get muddy in the winter months and slippery on any limestone. We have a bit of field tracks with livestock. There is a couple of steep sections coming in and out of the dales where care is needed. We will take it slow and steady. Dovedale can get busy but hopefully not this end, on a Monday in winter. The hole in the wall may or may not be open so its worth bringing lunch just in case. They sell hot drinks, pastries and snacks. The majority of the walk is easy going, its only the start and end where we have some hill walking to do. At the bottom of the dales can be quite chilly, even on a sunny day so wrap up.
