What to Expect
Starting from Rushton Spencer, this walk begins with a climb onto the surrounding hills, giving early glimpses of the rolling countryside and distant valley views. From the high ground, the route descends towards Danebridge along peaceful hillside paths, eventually reaching the quiet hamlet of Wincle nestled in the Dane Valley. The return journey follows a gentler, lower-level route alongside fields and lanes, winding back to Rushton Spencer for a scenic circular walk that balances open hilltop vistas with a tranquil riverside finish.
This is a lesser walked area of the Peak so expect some overgrown paths and hard to manage stiles! It will be a nice route to do on a busy bank holiday everywhere else. The route has two decent hills to climb before the last part of the day is steady. It is a mixture of footpaths through fields and quiet farm tracks. The ground will be uneven. There will be a lot of livestock around. We drop down to the river twice though it may not be accessible for a cooling dip for the dogs. There is a section along a disusded railway track which may be busy with cyclists.
