What to Expect
Set out from the Longshaw Estate for a windswept moorland walk that takes in the heights around Burbage and Stanage. With wide views, quiet paths, and the iconic Stanage Pole ahead, it’s a route that captures the drama and open beauty of the Peak District. Though the distance is substantial, the going is easy underfoot with only modest ascent.
We are taking on this walk during prime nesting season for ground nesting birds so unfortunately dogs will have to be on a lead for the majority of the walk. We have a couple of kms at the start where well behaved dogs can expel some energy off lead. It's a steady incline to up onto Stanage Edge but once we are up it's a nice level route along the tops. The ground will be uneven with rocks and boulders so care is needed for foot placement. There is sheer drops off the edge so dogs on lead, we can get as near or far away as we like to the edge. The walk over the moor away from Stanage can get boggy so sensible footwear and gaiters are advised. We follow a bridletracks back to the car so a nice easy finish. We do have to cross some busy roads a couple of times. We are very exposed to the elements and I have never known Stanage not to have a cold wind, even in summer! So be prepared!
