What to Expect
This stunning circular walk from Baslow captures some of the very best scenery in the Peak District. Climb gently out of the village to explore the dramatic gritstone escarpments of Baslow, Curbar and Froggatt Edges, each offering sweeping views across the Derwent Valley and the grand estate of Chatsworth House below. Along the way, pause by the Wellington Monument and the striking Eagle Stone, both rich in local history and character. After soaking in the endless views from the top, the route descends peacefully through woodland and riverside paths, following the River Derwent back towards Baslow, a perfect mix of moorland drama and tranquil valley walking.
There is initial road walking through the village of Baslow and along a farmers track. It's steep going onto the edges but once we are up we are up! The ground will be uneven though well walked. The stone is gritstone so very grippy even when wet. There may be livestock on the edges, especially on Baslow where lives some friendly and inquisitive highland cattle. We can go as close or as far away from the edges as you like. The public footpaths are set back but we can dip out to the edge for the views. We cross a busy road and walk along it for a few metres. The way down is steep through woodland, we need to be checking where we put our feet for tree roots. Along the river it can get boggy though we can avoid certain areas by coming off the path and joining the road.
