What to Expect
Start your year the right way with this invigorating 6.5-mile circular walk from the picturesque village of Edale. Climb steadily up the famous Mam Tor, known as the “Shivering Mountain,” where sweeping views stretch across the Hope Valley and Kinder Plateau. From there, follow the ridge west along Rushup Edge, enjoying panoramic vistas and crisp Peak District air, the perfect reminder of why fresh-air resolutions are worth keeping. Descend back into Edale with tired legs and a full heart, ready to reward yourself with a well-earned pint or steaming coffee at one of the village’s cosy pubs or cafés. New Year’s resolutions don’t get much better than this.
A quick little road crossing on a busy, almost one lane road and we're onto a bridle track. We pass through a farm and follow the track uphill. It's a gradual ascent of Mam Tor, longer but not as vicious as from Mam Tor Car Park. We need to be aware of mountain bikes that could be coming downhill quite fast. Up on the ridge it can be quite exposed but the way is mostly paved to Mam Tor. It can get quite busy on Mam Tor and dogs need to be on lead as the area is becoming eroded from visitor numbers. It's a steep descent and ascent with a careful road crossing. Its a wide grassy track, again very exposed to the elements. We descend gradual with a last little jaunt through some muddy fields back into Edale. Overall it could be tough going weather dependent but a great way to get into some proper hiking!
