What to Expect

Setting out from Codnor, this walk heads into rolling countryside in search of the remains of Codnor Castle, built in the 13th century by Henry de Grey. The ruins still hold a strong presence, offering a glimpse into the area’s past before the route drops down to the line of the old Cromford Canal, now a peaceful wildlife haven rich with birds and greenery. A well-timed stop at Codnor Park Reservoir makes the perfect spot for a bite to eat, before the final stretch back into the village, where a pint and maybe a roast at The Poet’s Corner rounds off the day nicely.

This is a great walk for anybody wanting to start their walking adventures with us. It's relatively easy going with only a couple of stiles to manage. The hills are steady and easy to manage. There is some field walking on public footpaths but a lot of the walk is along gravelled bridle tracks. There will be some livestock near the end of the walk. A lot of the walk is through a nature reserve and by the side of a canal which can be dangerous if dogs get into the water. There will be cyclist's along the canal, though technically there shouldn't be!
