What to Expect
This striking walk from Ladybower Reservoir and the impressive Derwent Dam climbs steadily up to Alport Castles, one of the Peak District’s most dramatic landslip formations. From the rocky outcrop, enjoy sweeping views across the Upper Derwent Valley before crossing the open moorland on the return route, a perfect mix of history, scenery, and wide, wild landscapes.
We start on the up immediately! Its a good leg stretcher with a steep incline. There is quite a bit of up and down on this walk. The route takes us through woodland and onto open access land in moorland. The paths are well walked but they are narrow and uneven. They can be very muddy when wet. We have to cross the busy A57. We will be quite remote and exposed on the tops so we need to be prepared for all weathers and elements. There is livestock throughout, the moorland will have the rare sheep rambling so we always need to be on the lookout.
