What to Expect
We get onto Kinder Scout via a quiet route past Ollerbrook Farm, avoiding any scrambling. In late August the hills are ablaze with purple heather. We stick to the edge with beautiful views down into the Edale valley and over to Mam Tor. Coming round to the north side of Kinder it becomes more wild and we can see over Snakes Wood and Pass. The farmland disappears and the valley below seems a million miles away from civilisation. We pass above Kinder Downfall, the waterfall either in full flow or only a trickle. A quick stop at Kinder Low and back round along the well known south edge of Kinder and back to Edale and the pub!
We take a more gradual ascent onto Kinder then more common routes and once we are on the plateau it's steady going. Some of the route is paved and some of it is just well walked paths, all of them uneven. As we don't head into the plateau itself the ground underfoot doesn't get too boggy. On the north side of Kinder we are a long way from anywhere, any escape options are best on the south side. We come back down on a steady route near to where we began. We can take an easier route if our legs are aching.
As with all our challenge walks you and your group need to be prepared for a long day. Kinder Scout can often be covered in mist and cloud whilst the rest of the Peaks is in full sunshine. You need a clothing for all eventualities and plenty of water and food.
