What to Expect
This adventurous 6-mile walk explores the rugged hills above the Sett Valley, taking in Mount Famine, South Head, and Chinley Churn. With steep climbs and rewarding ridgeline views, the route offers a true taste of the Dark Peak’s gritstone edge. Expect sweeping panoramas across the Kinder Plateau, quiet moorland paths, and a real sense of wild, open space—perfect for a half-day escape into classic Peak District scenery.
Its an easy ascent of Mount Famine with a steep section onto South Head. We are walking through open access land, farmland and farm tracks. The ground is uneven and can get wet. On Chinley Churn there is steep edges and disused quarries. There is livestock along this route. We start and end on a busy A road but not for long. There will be stiles and squeeze stiles.
