What to Expect
This walk begins with a climb up Shutlingsloe, often dubbed the "Cheshire Matterhorn" for its distinctive shape and far-reaching views. From the summit, the route descends into the heart of Macclesfield Forest, a peaceful contrast to the open hilltop, with winding trails beneath tall pines and alongside quiet reservoirs. Combining the drama of a hill climb with the tranquility of woodland walking, this route offers a varied and rewarding taste of the Peak District’s western edge.
Our ascent begins immedietly and we wil take it steady. She made be small but it certainly feels like we're taking on the Matterhorn. We have wide forest tracks, fields and paved footpaths. The descent is steep so care is needed. We have a steady, undulating walk along grassy footpaths. There is a mixture of footpaths, bridle tracks and forest tracks that can get busy with bikes. We cross a few quiet country lanes. The fields generally have livestock in them, sheep and cows.
