What to Expect
This rewarding walk from the village of Hayfield explores some of the Peak District’s quieter but no less striking hills—Mount Famine, South Head, and Chinley Churn. With steep climbs and far-reaching views across the High Peak, the route offers a rugged contrast to the gentler dales, taking in open moorland, gritstone edges, and the dramatic contours that define this wilder corner of the National Park.
We have a steep ascent of Chinley Churn where there is disused quarries and steep drops. It a gradual ascent of South Head with a last little steep section. Mount Famine is easy to navigate. The ground can get muddy when wet and their is livestock around. We will be walking on a mixture of field paths and bridle tracks. We cross the busy A624 once but its with good visibility. We have a little bit of walking through Hayfield and Chinley towns but not much. It can be quite exposed on the tops so be prepared for all seasons of weather.
