What to Expect
A walk on Kinder Scout following the historic route of the Kinder Mass Trespass is more than just a hike, it's a journey through one of the most significant moments in the history of public access to the countryside in England. On April 24, 1932, a group of determined ramblers defied private landownership laws and climbed Kinder Scout from Hayfield to protest the lack of public rights of way on open moorland. Their courageous act helped pave the way for greater access to Britain’s uplands, ultimately leading to the creation of National Parks and the right to roam. Retracing their steps today offers not only stunning views across the Peak District but also a powerful connection to the legacy of outdoor freedom and social change.
We start along a wide graveled track with a little steep incline to reach an uneven reservoir path. This soon gives way to a well walked footpath next to a stream up to the edge of the Kinder Plateau. This can get boggy at times and we walk through long grass and bracken. Along the top we follow the paved, but uneven path of the Pennine Way. We follow a bridle track off the hill at a steady rate. Kinder Scout is renowned for its bad weather so be prepared. In summer there isn't much shade so bring plenty of water for yourself and your dog. Care needs to be taken at crossing the Kinder Downfall waterfall.
